MS-HSM from Caminosoft supports HSM on Windows and Netware servers
Some MS-HSM definitions.
Managed Servers- Servers that host disks that contain data that is eligible for HSM management
Storage Servers- Servers that host disks that contain migrated data. A server can be both a managed server and a storage server.
Source disks - the disks that contain data that you want to manage. These disks are hosted on Managed Servers.
Target disks- the disks that you will migrate data to. These are held on a Storage Server.
Stub files small placer files left behind on the source disk, that point to the migrated data on the target disk
Management GUI PC based control panels that let you manage MSHSM
Policies rules that decide when a file is migrated or deleted.
Configuration files files that contain the policies and target rules. These are held on each source disk.
MS-HSM works with Netware 6.5 clusters or Win2000 clusters. Traditionally, MS-HSM used cheap disk for its backend datastore, but it also supports IBM's TSM, CA's Arcserve and EMC's Centerra as datastores now.
Installing MS-HSM
Installation is a simple process, described here for Netware servers. It is necessary to install an HSM agent on each managed server and a Windows PC management GUI
Installing the Netware Server code
Map a drive to the SYS: volume on your Managed Server
Run the install program from your PC
Reply to the prompts to select install directories
From the Netware consolem, add a search path SEARCH ADD SYS:/MSHSM/ or whatever directory you used
Enter MSSTART to start up the MS-HSM NLM(you use MSSTOP to stop MSHSM)
If you are installing on a Netware Cluster, the only requirement is to install MS-HSM on every Netware server in the cluster. MSHSM handles cluster failover without any special configuration except that the software must be installed and active on each node in the cluster. The SYS: volume on each server contains the NLMs in an MSHSM directory, while the logs and configuration for each server are held in SYS:/MSSCRIPT/.
However the rules and policies that are used to manage the data volumes are held in an MSSCRIPT directory on the data disks. That means that as the data disks move around between the servers in the cluster, their policies move with them.
If you are upgrading Netware code then some old configuration files can cause problems. Delete or rename the contents of the MSSCRIPT directory.
Installing the PC GUI
Simply run the 'setup' program from the install disk and follow the prompts.
The next two pages describe how to configure MS-HSM and some tips on how to manage it
